In March 1989, the corporation Lions Douglas Heights Seniors Residence Inc. was formed by the Fort Erie Lions Club for the purpose of building affordable seniors housing. Working with the Ministry of Housing funding was obtained and in June 1991, the 6-story, 56-unit affordable independent living apartment building for seniors was fully occupied.
From it’s beginning until today, there has been a service agreement in place with the Niagara Region (NR) as Service Manager to provide affordable (Rent Geared to Income & below market rent) apartments to seniors, aged 50 years and up. ALL tenants in the building are taken from the Affordable Housing Wait List maintained by NR.
The building is managed by a volunteer board made up of Fort Erie Lions and two “at-large” Members of the Community. The motto of the Lions is “We Serve” and it is this commitment with which the building is managed.
Having celebrated 33 years, the Lions Douglas Heights Seniors Residence is a well-maintained affordable independent living apartment building for seniors managed by a fiscally responsible Board.
